What is the goal of Buying Back The Planet?

Buying Back the Planet contributes to a healthy planet through collective land ownership. We become joint owners of land and ensure that it is managed sustainably.

What happens to the purchased land?

That depends on the type of land and who we work with. We may buy land that is designated as a nature area and manage it minimally so nature can thrive. When it comes to agricultural land, we work with a partner and/or a farmer who can work more sustainably thanks to the purchase. We manage land in collaboration with a local partner who knows what is needed locally.

Why is another initiative needed? This is similar to another initiative I know.

That’s right, there are several organizations active in The Netherlandsnmaking an impact. Across Europe there are numerous other initiatives as well. Buying Back the Planet provides unique added value by working internationally, and sharing lessons learned.

What happens to my contribution?

We use your membership fee to set up the organization and organize activities for members. In addition, you make a monthly contribution for land purchase. Your monthly contribution ends up in your membership account: This remains yours. With all of our collective contributions, we acquire land in order to manage it sustainably. 

Is it safe to participate?

Yes, it is safe to participate. We are setting up a cooperative under Dutch law with excluded liability (U.A. in Dutch). Members are therefore not liable for what happens in the cooperative. You can also never lose more money than what you have contributed.

Do you already have a location in mind?

We have a country in mind where we want to buy land first. We are currently researching this and looking for partners. As soon as we know more about this, we will share it.

Can I visit the purchased land?

We want to make sure that members can also visit the land. We take this into account when purchasing land.

Can I donate?

Yes, there will probably be a possibility to donate to the cooperative, and possibly to a separate foundation that you can donate to as well. As soon as it is possible to donate, we will let you know.
